We run curriculum support sessions for children from Year 1 to Year 6. Sessions for Years 1, 2 and 3 are led by Hazel on a Thursday. Sessions for Years 4, 5 and 6 are run by Danielle and are held on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday - depending on availability. Our curriculum support sessions are aimed at those children who need a little bit of support in order to feel confident in English and Maths at their year group level.
Each session follows a similar structure:
- Children take part in a differentiated, short mental arithmetic activity. This aids children in developing those basic ‘quick maths’ skills, which underpin all other areas of maths. Children progress through the levels and the repetition of these skills means they aren’t forgotten.
- A teacher-led maths objective is taught, and children work as a whole group to complete worked examples together on the board. The children have the opportunity to discuss and share ideas. They also have the chance to model their understanding using whiteboards and, if they wish, leading their peers in an example on the ‘teacher’s whiteboard’.
- Children then take part in an independent maths task, based on the objective covered as a whole group. This activity is differentiated, when necessary, and the opportunity for further development and challenge is also provided.
- Children have a short, 5-minute break. They are provided with a biscuit or can bring their own small snack.
- We then complete a Literacy objective. This varies each week between a SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) objective; and completing a guided-reading comprehension activity.
- Children are set homework to consolidate learning and, where appropriate, stretch their level of understanding.
Children in Years 2 and 6 also take a guided look at SATs-style questions in order to familiarise them with different question types so that they feel more confident about sitting their exams in school.
